SUMMARY
Makes ready and operates multi-unit, web-fed rotary press to print books, forms, manuals and other material according to written specifications by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Must Lead, direct, and instruct people
Self-Motivated and motivate others
Locks printing plates on printing cylinder and threads loose end of paper supply roll (web) through and around rollers to cutter and folder.
Adjusts compensators to guide paper over rollers and cylinders.
Inspects printed sheets visually after registration or position printing and readjusts guides and controls to rectify spacing errors.
Performs press rule up for quality verification.
Adjusts feed controls to rotate cylinder into position where plate-locking mechanism is accessible.
Unlocks plates and replaces with makeover plates according to directions marked on plate regarding location and time of printing.
Rethreads paper through press if web breaks (press stops automatically if web breaks) and readjusts tension rollers.
Operates pasting device to splice end of new paper roll to depleted roll.
Inspects printed material visually during production and readjusts controls to correct irregular ink distribution, faulty cuts or folds.
Replaces cutting blades, worn or damaged ink rolls, and fills ink wells.
Cleans, inspects, and lubricates moving parts of press.
Demonstrates self-improvement and willingness to continue to learn and help advance the offset printing department

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to two years related experience pressroom.
In-House Training Required
Must be able to understand and demonstrate both support and 2nd operator skills. (must be competent in all training packages)
Advanced in house GATF training with GATF staff
Advanced in house GATF training with NPC staff
Mentor training
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with co-workers, supervisors, vendor representatives, and other NPC employees.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. Ability to weigh and measure using a ruler, densitometer, scale, pica, and other related instruments.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form and apply common sense understanding to carry out.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for a 12-hour period excluding one 20-minute and two 10-minute breaks over a 12-hour shift. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and kneel; and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Overtime and shift rotation required.
