The Challenge
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) procures 49 different books, totaling in excess of 16,000 pages, and creating over 2.7 million impressions. Each cycle uses over 350,000 pounds of paper, and we ship approximately 13,000 packages to more than 10,000 customers. Each production cycle takes place in a 12-day period. This requires handling a database of 16,000 pages, including XML updates, to accommodate all changed pages in each cycle. The distribution is complex and requires accuracy as well as critical delivery schedules. The project required a conversion from a manual film process to a digital workflow, and pagination of individual PDF pages. Press proofs must be approved by the customer prior to production.

Our IT staff writes the appropriate programs that handle the XML changed pages and combine the complex distribution files to print packing lists and integrated labels to enhance pick-and-packing and delivery.
