An international, leading vacuum manufacturer needed a better return on its human capital and physical space. The company maintained an in-plant print facility, which produced all of the necessary printed materials that accompanied its products. These materials had always been viewed as a commodity from a production perspective, but a necessary evil due to regulatory requirements. The manufacturer believed that, due to the critical nature of its production process, it needed to maintain its own printing facility. A production line absolutely could not be shut down waiting for product documents. As a result, management assigned engineers and other key employees to keep the in-plant print facility “up and running.”

Much of what the manufacturer printed internally was legally required to be included in every product being shipped from its facilities. However, the associated costs were substantial. The organization sought a better way to fulfill this critical need.
NPC staff carefully examined the document needs of this manufacturer and devised a scalable solution that included a streamlined ordering process, a Web-based document management system, digital and offset printing, a reliable shipping program, and a pricing matrix allowing for easy determination of per-unit costs.
The manufacturer was able to close down its internal printing operation, freeing up monies and personnel for other core functions. In addition, enhanced capabilities through NPC helped to improve overall processes and results.
