NPC’s decades-long support of natural resources has evolved over the years. Our founders, Barney and Charlotte Barnhart, were true conservationists and active supporters of The American Chestnut Foundation. The Barnharts pursued environmentally-friendly initiatives over the years and donated energy and resources to reviving the magnificent hardwood species that once sustained so many lives in North America. In addition, the Barnharts donated acres of land to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to provide a haven for migratory birds.
Today, NPC conscientiously continues and expands on such environmental interests. Of special note are our intense programs to conserve resources by reducing waste and recycling materials such as paper, inks, and aluminum plates whenever possible. That’s just for starters. We choose chemicals, papers, production equipment and transportation methods that lessen our environmental impact and carbon footprint. Even our facilities are designed and constructed using sustainable building practices. (It’s interesting to note that all the dust collected by our air quality system is used for animal bedding by local farmers.)
As part of NPC’s commitment to helping preserve and improve the environment, we have made the investment as a company to earn third-party forest certifications. When labels from these organizations appear on printed products leaving our facility, this indicates that the raw materials for these products originated from certified, well-managed forests and other verifiable sources.
The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization established in 1993 to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests.
The mission of the FSC is to support environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests. FSC has offices worldwide and provides standards, trademark assurance and accreditation services for companies and organizations interested in responsible forestry.
Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that these products come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.
With our FSC certification in February 2009, NPC makes a commitment to our customers, partners and community with our support of responsible forest management. For more information, go to www.fsc.org.
Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) was founded in 1994 on principles that promote sustainable forest management. SFI is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for maintaining, overseeing and improving a sustainable forestry certification program that is internationally recognized and among the largest in the world.
NPC’s use of the SFI marks indicates that we are a Chain of Custody certificate holder and that NPC’s operations have been certified by an independent auditor to be in conformance with the SFI Annex 2 – SFI Chain of Custody Standard.
The SFI label is a sign that lets consumers know that they are purchasing wood and paper products from well-managed forests, backed by a rigorous, third-party certification audit.
NPC’s voluntary participation in the SFI program reflects our support of sustainable forest management. NPC was awarded SFI certification in February 2009. For more information, go to www.sfiprogram.org.
