Our founders started NPC, Inc. in 1954 with a simple idea to “keep people informed.” Since then, we’ve evolved from a local newspaper publisher to an operational powerhouse that makes it easy for our customers to deliver critical information, benefits and opportunities to hundreds of millions of Americans. But what powers our continuous quiet success story isn’t a new contract or machine, it’s the unshakeable foundation that was built before us. It’s a legacy rooted in family values and an entrepreneurial spirit. A legacy of breaking the mold, banding together to make the seemingly impossible… possible.

Barney and Charlotte Barnhart establish News Printing Company in Claysburg, PA, taking over three weekly newspapers. With their entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to quality, the foundation for a future industry leader is laid.
The company embraces web offset press technology, a cutting-edge innovation at the time, and merges its newspapers into The Blair Press. This decade also marks the beginning of a long-standing partnership with the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO), a relationship that continues to drive growth and set the stage for future success.
The company experiences significant expansion, increasing both its production capabilities and workforce. Strengthened by its reliable service and partnership with the GPO, News Printing Company begins to position itself as a major player in government printing.
After years of success in the newspaper business, the Barnhart’s make the strategic decision to sell The Blair Press, allowing the company to focus exclusively on commercial and government printing. Mark Barnhart becomes a second generation owner and steps into the role of CEO during this transformative period. To enhance client relationships and cultivate long-term partnerships, the company establishes “Barneywood,” a dedicated customer retreat.
The company enters the digital age, adding digital printing services to create a hybrid offset/digital workflow solution—innovating to meet the needs of a fast-evolving industry. To accommodate growing demand, a 100,000 sq. ft. facility is opened in Claysburg, PA, and News Printing Company earns a spot among the top three Federal Government print suppliers.
In 2001, the company rebrands as NPC Inc., reflecting its evolution into a comprehensive service provider offering digital and business process management services. Manufacturing space grows by an additional 95,000 sq. ft., and in 2005, NPC is named the top GPO contractor, solidifying its leadership in government and commercial printing.
This decade sees continued innovation, with significant investments in high-speed digital printing and inserting equipment. These advancements allow NPC to cater to the increasingly sophisticated needs of its clients, positioning the company as a trusted partner for government agencies and businesses alike.
NPC reinforces its commitment to growth through reinvestment in talent, state-of-the-art equipment, and streamlined processes. As a post-pandemic leader, NPC has become a strategic partner of choice for clients seeking reliability and innovation in their printing and mailing solutions. The company continues to rank among the top two GPO contractors, a testament to its operational excellence and adaptability.
Operating out of five facilities and covering 367,500 square feet of manufacturing space, NPC employs 480 self-reliant individuals who are dedicated to upholding the company’s core values of quality, security and timeliness. The company remains focused on future growth while staying true to the principles that have guided it since 1954.
